WILD for Education
The Challenges
Learners and places of learning in the 21st Century are beset by challenges not faced and sometimes not understood by preceding generations. While the pressure for grade-based achievement is unrelenting, there is a growing body of evidence, now too large to ignore, that this race for grades excludes most learners and ultimately fails to benefit even the race ‘winners’. Recruiters are now routinely looking beyond traditional academic measures to evaluate prospective recruits.
Places of learning are complex systems. They evolve, often over many decades, to be a synthesis of history, custom, practice and the expectations of client stakeholders. In such contexts, initiatives can founder in the face of passive conservatism or simply become diluted and sidelined by the busyness of the day to day. The pressures are ramped up, in differing global contexts, by league tables, aggressive standards-based inspection regimes or competition from growing privatisation.
Initiative overload is a universally voiced complaint; innovations are often succeeded by new initiatives before proper time is allowed to evaluate and reap the benefit of investment. Linear directive interventions rarely take root in complex systems – but leaders fall into a loop of ‘what next?’ change which often leaves the day–to-day learner experience untouched.
There is a crisis of social and personal disorders amongst young people, exacerbated by the pandemic but arguably triggered by the inception of smart phones which have ‘rewired’ childhood, reducing opportunities to build resilience through risk-taking play, peer interaction and synchronous communication. Many young learners have become fragile and vulnerable.
Increasingly, both employers and Higher Education are looking beyond academic attainment to recruit school leavers who have the personal values, skills and dispositions to thrive in dynamic, uncertain, future environments.
The ability to demonstrate self-knowledge, be a self-starter and take initiative as a learner or an employee, is becoming the differentiator for recruitment. Research shows that these future focused values, skills and dispositions are harder to find. Reports from employer organisations suggest a growing need for comprehensive onboarding programmes to match employer needs. The school and college-leaving population has become less prepared for its next steps.
Schools have struggled to find the capacity to generate these holistic capabilities against success expectations focused on measuring attainment. Businesses and HE institutions find themselves with onboarding challenges that they are not adequately prepared to meet.
Our Solutions
WILD will co-design a bespoke learning journey for your organisation and your key personnel which will be rooted on transformational outcomes within your specific context and your current strategic goals.
This journey might be rooted in changing human resource systems or in developing a personal learning curriculum that embeds future capabilities in both transdisciplinary and progressive learning strands (or both) and reimagines assessment.
We will do this by:
Listening to you
Developing an impact plan with specific and measurable outcomes
Agreeing the size and scope of a project that can deliver significant, sustainable change
Guiding you through the five phases of a WILD journey for collaborative learning: Discover; Purpose; Plan; Do; Review
Training key members of your team to be accredited WILD coaches
Facilitating peer coaching workshops
Opening extended access to our Learning Power diagnostic tool
Mentoring your lead coaching team
Enabling access to WILD’s community of practice, including a rich resource library which will be available for the duration of the project and beyond
Consulting, as required, on appropriate human resource, operational or curriculum development processes, policies and strategies to promote behaviour change at scale across a target group
Recording and sharing impact data to validate the investment you have made.
Our Training Programmes
As our clients travel on their transformational learning journeys, we travel with them. Over time, we are able to develop discussions and strategy around how organisations can develop their own self-reliance and sustainable leadership of learning and strategy in a new paradigm.
We support this deep capacity building with two training programmes. Each programme builds upon the foundational training that we offer to become a WILD coach. The first programme, which is pitched at Master’s level, aims to prepare the leaders and aspiring leaders in an organisation for a totally reimagined approach to create systemic change. The second programme, pitched at Diploma level, is specifically focused on developing the capacity of learning professionals to create the conditions for change and growth.
With a wealth of research and experience, our programmes are designed to get the best out of people, personally, professionally and in everything they do, helping them to unlock their potential and create resilient, confident and aspiring individuals.
Our Founder, Professor Ruth Crick is a world leading expert in learning and leading for resilient agency. Our WILD learning programmes draw extensively upon her published and peer reviewed research.
